Food for Dancers: Energy Bites

As a dancer, you need a lot of energy to keep up both at school and at the studio. The most important way to stay on top of your game is through a balanced diet heavy in whole grains, protein and fiber, but low on sugar.

It can sometimes be difficult to find something nutritious when you're constantly on the go, and so it can be tempting to go for a bag of chips, a doughnut or something from a fast food restaurant to keep fed during your busy days. But this will have the opposite effect: instead of keeping you full and energized during a long session of classes, you'll feel tired and sluggish, not to mention the food won't be very filling and you'll eventually be hungry again.

So step away from the bag of chips and step up to energy bites. Made with simple, healthy ingredients, these delicious little bites pack a punch and deliver a filling alternative for a grab-and-go snack. The best part is they don't require any actual cooking!

Try out these tasty bites from Kristine's Kitchen and enjoy a healthy and satisfying snack before or during dance class!

"Filled with oats, almond butter, and fresh apple, these no-bake Apple Cinnamon Cookie Energy Bites are a healthy snack that's perfect for all ages!"

Recipe type: Snack

Serves: 2 dozen

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups old-fashioned oats

  • ¼ cup ground flaxseed

  • ¾ teaspoon cinnamon

  • ½ cup almond butter

  • ¼ cup plus 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • pinch of salt

Coupons

  • 1 cup (not packed) grated apple (about 1 medium)

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a large bowl, stir together the oats, flaxseed, and cinnamon. In another bowl or a liquid measuring cup, stir together the almond butter, honey, vanilla, and pinch of salt until well combined. Pour over the oat mixture and stir until everything is evenly coated. (I use my hands at the end to make sure everything is well mixed.) Stir in the grated apple.

  2. Scoop the mixture into tablespoon-sized portions (I use my small cookie scoop), and use your hands to squeeze it together into a ball. Slightly wet hands will help to keep the mixture from sticking.

  3. Store the energy bites in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will keep for 3-4 days. Enjoy!
